decontamination of hands contaminated with liquid radioactive material decontamination of hands contaminated with liquid radioactive material
Posted by: bionerd23

Video duration: 484 seconds

this is a rather harmless experiment with just 5 MBq of Tc-99m.
only a tiny fraction ends up on my hands, and there's virtually zero whole body dose from this... plus the physical half life is just 6 hours.
DO NOT TRY THIS with your radium watch hands or other long-lived, biologically active radioactive material!

albedo dosimeter? how does it work? see here: http://flic.kr/p/bJM rW6
...and if you just want to know the facts: i received ~100 uSv during 2 days of staying in chernobyl, but ~240 uSv while spending 2 days on the tourist beaches of brazil.

Posted by: bionerd23

Video duration: 117 seconds

the pine trees in this forest turned brown as they died from the intense levels of radiation after the chernobyl disaster.
the whole forest was torn down; now, fresh trees are growing on the still quite radioactive grounds, seemingly without problems.

this claw was used to pour graphite into the burning reactor of chernobyl in the initial days after the incident.
to this day, it remains highly contaminated.

not much radiation here - hardly above ambient levels in europe.
it's but an intermission, displaying the true physical hazards of the "zone" - condemned buildings and wildlife.

maps of the exclusion zone as well as views of the reactor of chernobyl from different angles... and from up close.
radiation levels in front of the reactor building: harmless.
much stronger radiation is to be found off-site... i'll talk about it later.

Video duration: 184 seconds

?????? was a small village near chornobyl. it was entirely torn down as it was heavily contaminated... only the kindergarten - which was too solid to tear down quickly - remained...
nowadays, the radiation levels here are minor. the zone provides much stronger stuff...

we know that there's a lot of Thorium-232++ and some Uranium-238++ in the natural monazite sand from brazil.
but just how MUCH is there, in terms of an activity in becquerel (decays per second) per kilogram? well... let's find out. :)

recipe:
- put YBa2Cu3O7 disc into cup.
- add boiling liquid nitrogen.
- let stand until supercooled.

quite amazing to see how an 18 MeV photon beam in one meter distance for ~30 seconds (for a dose of 1 Gy in 1 meter from beam focus) is capable of turning my poor gamma scout RADIOACTIVE! :D
